Description
Joe Church went out to Rwanda as a young missionary doctor in 1927 determined to treat his patients and African co-workers as equals – for which he was sometimes criticised. His dedication to God, and his love for his fellow man were an integral part of the great revival that swept East Africa like a mighty bushfire; transforming a sleepy, hypocritical and often sinful church into a shining, vibrant and witnessing community.
The Coming of the Rain paints a fascinating picture of the pioneering work of Dr. Joe Church in East Africa and the events leading up to and surrounding the Revival. Recent events in Rwanda have caused many people, to whom Rwanda appeared like a ‘jewel in the crown’ of missionary work, to ask ‘What went wrong?’ The Coming of the Rain offers illuminating insights into Rwandan culture that may throw some light onto the current situation.
