The Inspector and Silence is the fifth book in the Inspector Van Veeteren series by Swedish author Håkan Nesser. The crime thriller, originally published in 1997, follows Chief Inspector Van Veeteren as he investigates a murder case involving a reclusive religious sect. 

In the middle of a heatwave, an anonymous woman calls the police in the fictional town of Sorbinowo to report a girl missing from a summer camp. The camp is run by a mysterious religious sect known as The Pure Life, led by the enigmatic figure Oscar Yellineck.
